Love at First Threesome: A Wine Review

Blog: The Chicks Uncorked

I found the love of my life at the grocery store. While perusing the wine aisle, I noticed there was a red blend with a provocative name: Ménage à Trois. But the label didn’t entrance me nearly as much as the cost. By some miracle of the price tag gods, the whole display showed a cost of $3.99 per bottle.

I knew I should immediately go to the manager and report the obvious error. But maybe it wasn’t a mistake. Maybe it was a well-orchestrated promotional deal with the vintner, and who was I to question marketing strategists with consumer knowledge far beyond my understanding? So I placed the bottle in my cart, trying to hide it between a head of cabbage and can of garbanzo beans and headed to the checkout.

I felt like a kid shoplifting candy; I was just waiting for the clerk to chastise me for trying to purchase an obviously mispriced bottle. But it didn’t happen. He rang me up as if nothing was amiss. This convinced me all the more that it was indeed a marketing promotion, and I was just lucky enough to get a bottle before they sold out.

Once home and having waited for the requisite drinking hour, I opened the suggestive bottle and served myself and Mr. Hubby generous pours. Maybe it was the thrill of getting such a great deal that was making me a little woozy, but the wine tasted absolutely delicious. It had a very fruity start and an exceedingly smooth finish. I was in love.

I returned to the grocery store the following week, and the price was still $3.99. I filled up my cart like Seinfeld’s Elaine scooping up available sponges. I continued to do this for weeks, maybe a month, until the jig was finally up – the price had been corrected to $9.99. Turns out it really had been a pricing error that was unnoticed by management the entire time. The store is no longer in business, and I have to wonder if a lack of price control may have accelerated its demise.

But the increased price didn’t stop me from continuing the risqué love affair. Ménage à Trois continues to be my favorite wine at the $9-10 price point, lo these many years later.

If you haven’t tried it, pour yourself a splash and see if you agree. If not, that’s OK, but please know you’ll never earn a spot in my threesome.
